Chapter 25 was all about speaking on special occasions. It is important to recognize the type of occasion before planning the speech because the occasion determines the purpose and mood of the speech. Purposes include to entertain, to celebrate, to commemorate, to inspire, to set a social agenda, etc. Special occasion speeches can include speeches of introduction, speeches of acceptance, speeches of presentation, roasts and toasts, eulogies or other tributes, after-dinner speeches, and/or speeches of inspiration. Regardless of the type…

Someone who I know that is a good public speaker is Dr. Vincent. She is my professor for my pharmacy class and is one of my advisors. In class she presents herself really well and is interactive with the class. Something I like that she does when presenting is that she asks the class periodically if we have any questions. This gets the class involved and definitely gets everyone’s attention back in the presentation if anyone strayed away. She uses…

For my second speech, I think I improved from my first speech. However, I was still super nervous when I got up in front of the class. I know my voice was definitely shaky in the beginning and I was talking really fast it seemed like. I do think that I was able to calm down more towards the middle of my speech though. I became a lot more comfortable with the audience and speaking in front of them as…

After doing my two dry runs I feel a lot better about my speech. Before, I was nervous because I usually always am when I have to give a “speech” in front of people. But doing the dry run with groups of 3 definitely made me feel more comfortable about presenting next week. When reflecting back on my dry runs, I realized that I am very close and/or over the time limit. This was confusing to me because I thought…

Chapter 13 was all about how to efficiently outline speeches. I think this was a really important chapter because outlining is something I want to become better at. The biggest takeaway was that when preparing for your speech, two outlines are ideal–one for writing down all your ideas and one for delivering your speech. The two delivery outlines include key-word and phrase outlines. I hope that by the end of the course I will be able to deliver speeches with…

To polish up my speech I need to rehearse more and incorporate how I will be using a video to showcase my skill. Right now I have a pretty good outline of what I want to say, I have a well thought out introducation and I have all of the steps finalized. But, I do need to come up with how I am going to end my speech. I am thinking about writing about how the pottery class has changed…

Chapter 11 highlights the importance of organization in body paragraphs. When outlining speeches, body paragraphs should be separated by major claims and main ideas. It is important that the main points are limited in order to keep the audience’s attention during the entire speech. A big takeaway for me was that the primacy and recency effect (remembering the information at the beginning or end of the speech, not so much the middle information) play a large role in what the…

For my first speech, I think it went better than I was anticipating. I thought that I was going to be super shaky and forget everything I had initially planned to say in my speech. However, I think I did a good job overall. I liked having the outline of my speech rather than a whole written out speech because it is a lot less stressful and easier to navigate. The audience seemed very engaged which made me feel a…

When preparing for something, I always try to practice or rehearse before the event in order to do my best. For example, before a track meet, I would always train and practice how I could efficiently run my best 400m. Practicing the week before the meet always made me run better because I knew what to expect and was able to confidently establish the running technique that works best for me. Just like track, preparation betters performance in any event,…
