Introduction:

When I was first introduced to the format of my essay, I was told to write a narrative essay that told a story that made me want to change or change something in society. I knew I wanted to write about my experience working every summer since freshman year in high school but I didn’t exactly know how to connect it to a change. After consulting with my professor and some of my friends, I decided that I was going to relate working and school with multitasking. Obviously I needed to multitask when working to achieve ultimate customer satisfaction, but this skill was not efficient when I tried to do this while doing homework or taking notes from a lesson.

As I wrote my narrative, I shaped it in a way that demonstrated how multitasking allowed me to keep up with the demands I encountered while being a server at a restaurant. Then, for my persuasive, I turned around and stated how while multitasking was beneficial for me when working, this skill should not be used when doing activities that require higher brain activity. My three solutions to my persuasive statement were 1) recognize the difference between activities where multitasking is feasible 2) implement actions in the classroom that decrease multitasking, and 3) inform parents on how they can encourage study habits that don’t involve multitasking. After I had my three solutions, the paper was easy from there. I knew specific examples I could use for each solution and I found a substantial amount of research regarding multitasking.
